Topic 2: Addressing the Implications of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems for International Security
Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS) are systems which, once activated by a human, can identify, select and engage targets with lethal force without further human intervention. While systems incorporating rudimentary autonomous functions - such as landmines and loitering munitions systems (LMS) - have existed for decades, recent technological advancements, especially in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), have accelerated the creation of LAWS, making them more effective than ever before. Systems such as the Bullfrog - an AI-enabled autonomous machine gun - the Switchblade 600 Block 2 - an LMS with AI powered Aided Target Recognition (AiTR) capabilities - and Marker - an anti-tank robotic unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) - are all examples of LAWS being developed right now.
We invite you to consider the implications that LAWS pose for international security, and how they can, or whether they should, be regulated.
