Steps to Prevent Further Escalation of the Ukraine Conflict

After more than four and a half years of war, Ukraine and Russia seem to be both as close to a ceasefire as they have ever been, and immensely far from one at the same time. Negotiations throughout early 2026 yielded little result as neither Ukraine nor Russia were ready for significant concessions despite pressure from the US. One of the main hindrances to the peace negotiations are continued escalations both on and off the battlefield: from Russian incursions into NATO airspace and expansion of its military to Ukraine’s deep strikes. Combined with popular rhetoric within Russia, and to an extent Ukraine, remaining opposed to a scaling down of the conflict, it is more crucial than ever to curb political and military escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war in order to allow a lasting peace to develop.

Consider the points made in the peace proposals made over the course of the war and the factors that allowed the Easter ceasefire happen in 2026. Take into account other de-escalation initiatives, such as the Black Sea Grain Initiative, why they succeeded or ultimately failed, and what can be gathered about what the respective involved nations are willing to compromise on and compromise for.
