Addressing the Growing Issue of Non-Medical Prescription Drug Use
Non-medical prescription drug use (NMPDU) refers to the consumption of a medication without a prescription, for recreational purposes or for the self-treatment of a mental and/or physical issue. This is a widespread problem which encompasses various factors, including the methods of acquisition of prescription medication, the conditions and ways in which such controlled substances are consumed and the related behaviours preceding non-medical prescription drug use by an individual. In order to wholly deal with this issue, it is crucial to take into consideration all of the aforementioned factors as well as the ‘International Standards on Drug Use Prevention’ in order to improve and create new drug abuse prevention programmes.
